Prominentester Häftling war der jetzige südafrikanische Präsident Nelson Mandela, der 18 Jahre lang, von 1964 bis 1981, dort gefangen gehalten wurde. Die Robbeninsel wurde Ende 1995 zum Nationaldenkmal erklärt.
